What is video game preservation?
Video game preservation is the effort to keep games and their history from disappearing. That means dumping cartridges before they stop working, building software that can run old hardware on modern machines, rescuing source code from defunct studios, and scanning the manuals and magazines that nobody thought to save. It also means fighting legal battles over who owns what, tracking down IP holders who have no idea they hold rights to anything, and documenting games that never even made it to store shelves. The scope is wider than most people expect. A game is comprised of many things to consider when considering preservation: its development history, its online infrastructure, its source code, its box art, its cultural impact. When any of those things are lost, something real is lost with them. Preservation is the work of making sure that happens as rarely as possible.Â
SaveGaming.Org is a resource library intended to serve as a comprehensive, academically-oriented reference for the field of video game preservation. It is not a ROM site, an emulator repository, or a place to download games.
